The “front line” therapists for children are often their caregivers. We believe in spending one to three sessions with the parent(s) or caregivers before seeing children. Sometimes it is important to gather feedback from other family members, school personnel or day care providers.
There are many approaches and parenting strategies that can prepare children to respond to therapy very quickly, or make it unnecessary for them to even meet with a therapist. This is not always the case, and we approach each situation individually.
Children often respond very quickly to EMDR when there is sufficient information to tailor an approach to resolve the issues that have caused their “upset.”
Some children experience unique circumstances due to loss experienced in adoption or separation from their earliest caregivers. This can seem to be a very brief, insignificant period of time to an adult, yet have a very profound impact on children. Early intervention can prevent many years of difficulty for both the child and the family. The Florida Institute for Family Attachment specializes in these attachment issues.
